is this worth getting, and what are the drawbacks to getting it?

i was inclined to getting it but as i was setting it up it asked for my ID and my social security number and my actual bank information

its one thing for my card to get drafted but i dont know about direct banking information -- thoughts?

It looks to me like its like the Target debit version of the red card.  Its linked directly to your bank account.  I think theyre probably trying to appeal to people who dont want/cant get the credit card.

I've been trying to figure that out too. Like there has to be something Kroger is getting out of this.

But there's only one thing they're getting out of this, and it makes sense. Data. They're getting data on your spending habits outside of Kroger. Telling them how often you shop elsewhere, and how much.

It's not data, it's money. This doesn't tell them your spending habits outside of Kroger. How would it?

It costs $$$ to process credit cards. Debit cards are cheaper, but still have a fee. But ACH is free. Running their own "debit" card that draws from your bank account directly is cheaper-- they basically pull from your account like they would pull a check.

Look up the drama over Visa cards in some regions-- there are some divisions that no longer accept Visa as a form of payment because the fees are too high.
