Does anyone know what being promoted to back up will pay? Will it be a small raise, or is there a general amount you get specifically for being a back up?
The contract in Michigan is $1.00 above pay rate all the time. When the manager is away for a week, they get their pay rate.
What local are you in? They don't have that in 876
876.
I can't find it in the handbook. I am under the metro contract. When we voted the last contract(March 15, 2017), I got a flier from the union rep. "All leads will advance to their top rate of pay plus $1 premium". I have never asked the back up, but I assumed they got my pay rate when I was on vacation.
I might have misunderstood the flier.
After some thought, I think Lead and Back up are two different positions.
Our Frozen used to have a Lead. Now, they are a Department Manager with the new contract. I will have to ask my back up if they get the extra dollar.

I'm confused, I believe a Lead normally receive the $1 Premium over their current rate of pay. An "Backup" (Assistance Department Manager) should be another rate of pay. I know they have tried over and over again to call Department Managers, Department Leads/Leaders.....not sure if they were trying to downgrade positions?
I can not remember a time this many people have been stepping down, quitting, etc. I found out recently one Store Manager recently straight up quit one day, without another job lined up, just because he was over the abuse. Another quit and went to a other retailer establishment, each had 15+ years.

I can't explain with certainty.
The larger high volume stores have different positions available. Some stores have 3 Grocery Department managers. Morning, Evening and Overnight. Smaller stores have a Grocery manager and a person in charge of nights as a Lead(not as high paying as a department manager).
Frozen, Dairy and Nutrition fall under Grocery here(I assume most stores have already transitioned nutrition under Grocery).
The Day Grocery Manager was in charge of all of them. I have always known Dairy to have their own Department manager. Frozen and Nutrition(main person running department) has always been a lead. With the new contract, the Frozen lead became their own department manager with higher pay.
Yes, the stress level of the job has increased. The Department Managers are expected to do more with less. The store managers are under the same pressures from their bosses. We have to in order to stay competitive with other grocery chains and amazon. Sales are constantly increasing. Expectations are also increasing and changing. The new hires pool has reached the bottom of the barrel. Kids now a days expect to take it easy instead of show initiative and get work done. And, they want top dollar now. Only want to work 4 days but not weekends and less than 8 hours but always whining that they are broke. There are a few exceptions every once in a while. But, the pay or hours isn't enough to interest them in staying around. Slackers don't stick around too long for me. They learn the call in process quick. Many lack common sense like they never played with legos or something. :) Have to explain the job over and over and over. It's not rocket science. Open case, fill shelf while rotating, make shelf look nice, scan backstock. Instead, I have people throw severely dented cans on shelf, sloppily toss product on shelf, can't be bothered to learn cao or use math brain cells. The seasoned employees we get with work ethic are worn out most of the time. Take job seriously but can't move any faster or bother to learn computer stuff.
I get a little stressed but try not to get frustrated.
