I don't know if this is just my division or or if it's corporate wide but they just announced that buy one get one free items will no longer be sold at half price for one. You have to buy one at full price and then the second one rings up as $0.00. So my question is what happens if somebody wants to return one of the items. Do you tell the person at the office you're returning the one you paid for and keep the free one? What if they want both items back but you've already used one of them? Can they refuse to take back the one item? Giving back half the customer's money sort of defeats the whole point of their idea in the first place. Whatever they do, it's a bad idea.
I think as long as they exchange it for another item of equal or lesser value, then they will be able to exchange it. They keep the "free" one, but exchange the other one at the same price or lesser.
For example if they bought 2 cokes but they wanted to exchange one of the cokes for a Pepsi then they keep one coke and exchange the other one for a Pepsi. If they want a full refund on both cokes then they must return both. If they are not able to return both items then you kindly send them on their way.
