Heard that all stores in the near future will have someone in every department overnight. Most likely 12a-8a.

Have your stores started this? If it has, does it work?

My store has an overnight deli person that comes in at 1am and they do a lot of the work for the day, like getting the truck, setting the salad case, and starting grab n go.

We don't have the staff to have an overnight person in every department. I would love to have an overnight bakery person to fill the floor. I would do it because then i could actually get stuff done, but i would hate working 3rds forever.

There's overnight produce guy in my old store. He's been with the company longer than most of the store and regional management, so he pretty much dictated his shifts and schedule.

Corporate wants us to have an overnight baker but the store manager and the bakery manager don't.  The bakery manager is like you in thinking if we have to have an overnight person, she'd rather that they do things like put away the frozen order and fill tables.  They also don't want to train another baker.  I'm the main bread baker and I  have the most seniority.  So if they want an overnight person, it's not going to be me.  It also helps that I happen to be a very good baker and I don't think they want to risk the quality of the bread going down if someone else who's had no training bakes the bread.

Its all about productivity and everything is a cycle with the company. With having overnight associates, don't expect any additional hours and expect a even more minimal crew during the day. But in reality overnight stocking is the "best plan", but with late or missing trucks, its not always the best option. Yes, Deli, Bakery, Grocery, Non-Foods and stock a lot of product, but Meat, Dairy, Produce cant survive with only overnight stocking. In reality there is now way the warehouses could guarantee trucks to be delivered for only over night stocking hours.  Deli Grab-N-Go, Bakery Baking should be done offsite and shipped to the stores....Just like cut fruit is now.
