Saw my old store manager today
Permalink

My store manager got transferred out right around the time I quit. He didn't exactly leave under good circumstances, and got sent to the "food stamp store" that they send new co-managers to prove themselves and old managers they want to get rid of.

This guy was an ******* to work for. At one time he was the young hotshot opening up new stores, but 15 years of being passed over for promotions turned him into a miserable prick. They kept him parked at our small store because he kept sales up, but really didn't like him at all. He finally got store director by whining to the regional leadership until they gave in. Well several HR fiascos later they finally send him to his "end of the road store".

This morning while shopping I notice he's actually there and in his office. After 5 minutes of chatting it was obvious that he was ****ing miserable, especially when I rattling off the awesome benefits of my new job. Seeing him sitting there in a ****ing supermarket waiting to get ****canned on a Sunday morning while his ex employees are happily shopping with their families and planning a picnic by the pool made my weekend.

Don't you see people this is what this job does to you. It drains human begins of their humanity and uniqueness. We're treated like slaves with no chance of future success. It doesn't matter what level you work at it's all the same.

Say good bye to life, family, family events, watch your family grow up and pass away, be message harassed at funerals/weddings/family events, skip your own wedding (happened to a coworker of mine), skip your own dam graduation, say good bye to time off and vacations, be on call 24/7. Use your vacation pay to cover rent because management wants a bigger bonus at the end of the year and reduces store hours. Haven't been on a real vacation in 5+ years. Schedule a vacation, tell them repeatedly and still be scheduled while you're out of town. Can't schedule your self for any fun classes because all your schedule requests are denied. Minor health issues turn into medical emergencies with life scaring ongoing health issues because they won't let you have time off to take care of your self. Report even the tiniest injury or ongoing health issue brought on by this job and you're cause for termination. People would rather work injured than report it. Because most of us can't take 6-10 months off work for a major injury to heal. This job beats you down and spits you out.

This job abuses your skills, time and talents and sucks away your life. It doesn't uplift you or anything. When you try to do good you get punished and beaten down. The more you do it the more beaten down you are. Just when you're at the top again it pummels you good. They create programs to try to bring the moral up but it doesn't work. Fix the problem before you spend millions on a useless promotional program. Feed the spirit is another way to say "We're not paying for your uniforms anymore." Sorry but that's how I see it. Fix the moral of your coworkers by giving them better pay, a better work life balance and allowing them to have some damn personal time now and then. And no it's not just your one personal day a year you get. It's called let us have a life out side of work. Promotional opportunities just plain don't happen here. It doesn't matter what position you are in with this company it does it to everyone. I've been a hard worker and am stale mate with this company for years. You leave the company as a hollowed out individual deprived of emotion and a total prick to everyone.  Once upon a time happy instacart shoppers are now just as miserable as the rest of us. Don't you see you'll loose your soul and emotions with this company.

When I hit that point of mental programming where I just couldn't take it any more my emotions quit. I have just enough not to be a psychopath. Don't get me wrong I try to be kind and courteous. I just don't plain give a **** any more. I've heard so much customer complaining, belittlement and foibles all day long about this and that I just don't give a **** any more. The personality you entered in with this company as is dead when you exit. You're a twisted warped individual when you leave. Don't believe me work here for 5+ years and tell me your report when you're done.

OP here. This guy is stuck because once he get kicked to the curb, no companies will pay him what he's making now. He'll end up a Co at some ****ty local chain with worse morale than Kroger making less than $100k to close every night.

OP again. I got blacklisted for promotion after I went to the hospital the day before "corporate might be in town". No way I'm sacrificing my health for a grocery store. You wanna Miss your kids growing up to appease some district manager? Go right ahead. I'm out.

Work was happening so fast and being the newbie on the list I didn't get much say in my first 5 years of employment. I put my foot down after I missed a vip family member funeral. They knew I was pissed because I took my angry mourning phase out on them. Now they know to give me a work life balance or else...

They kept violating my ADA reasonable accommodation. After they kept ignoring it, I got some legal advice and went back to the store management to have a discussion: "these are my restrictions, I don't care when the district manager wants employees in to open, and if you try to reduce me to part time status I will begin legal proceedings."

And one day when all these managers are on their deathbeds, they'll wish they had just a little more time to make that last corporate walkthrough a bit better...NOT!!!!bleh
