I ask this because I was on a break with a friend and he told me about his situation:

He works in the deli, yet he is constantly asked to do things that do pertain to the deli.

"They constantly call me back to receiving to do bales, up front to bag, and cashier, they even asked me once if I would help stock an aisle once in the middle of service."

"But all of that should be assigned to other people yet I get told to do all of this"

Is this common at your store? Are you allowed to refuse if it isn't part of what you do at Kroger?

Here's what I've learned after working at Kroger many many years:

1. Do not learn how to do anything that doesn't have to do with your job.

2. If you do know how to do something, don't let anybody know that you know how.

Once they figure out you know how to do several things, they won't leave you alone.  I just let them think I'm stupid.

Everyone that isn't a CC or under a meat contract is required to do anything a manager requests them to do, as long as they aren't putting your life in danger. If you're in the union you could try bringing it up in your meetings and see what other people say about it. You could try talking to your manager and maybe convince them to call for someone else instead of you.

I am day stocker and by rights, I'm not supposed to bag, get carts, do Utility Clerk duties, or Courtesy Clerk duties. Guess who does them anyway from time to time? This guy. Why? Because management asks me to. Not that I want to, I have to. And when there is a No-Call no-show, or a call out I get chosen to do it. I don't get in trouble for my work not being done because management absolves me of any responsibilities of things not being done
Plus I'm pretty quick and I just do a bit of my work in between covering for the cc/uc

WRONG. Youre just a stocker you have no worth what so ever you can be replaced easily cause a monkey could do your job. When they call you to go get carts guess what? you stfu and run your fat ass and get carts. Sh!t on the walls? CLEAN IT UP! When they need baggers get your ass up there and ask paper or plastic?

At my store, this is very common.  But at my store, it's worse than that.

The front end is a goddamn **** show, so the departments are asked to cashier until their own departments suffer to the point of writeups.

So of course they stop coming up, and then get written up for that.

It's amazing.

The departments can't win, so then they protest in their own way.  When meat was called up, they'd smear blood and hamburger all over themselves and pretend not to know how to work the register.  That is, until a smart one stole a union handbook and found that meat didn't have to cashier.  And when the front kept on calling the only deli employee, they'd just come on up and leave the deli unstaffed until the smart meat guy showed them they didn't have to cashier either.  Produce is ****ed, though, and the prime-time produce guys tend to quit since they get sick of writeups and bull**** real quick.

What I would say is to never, ever, say yes to anything unless you are willing to do that (and possibly solely that) for the rest of your Kroger employment.

When I worked produce, they use to ALWAYS call me to do floral.dept as well. It didnt master if I had my own work that was piling up. Apparently balloons were essential to have with flowers. (Not!) And I had to make floral arrangements AND know the care needs if each plant. (Not gonna happen). I can understand balloons, but floral arrangements and plant care I was not really trained for...

All in all, I did fairly well. And I still get called to do floral arrangements from time to time. Not bad from a "worthless stocker" (Oh, and a BIG F*CK YOU to the troll that said that) because management says I do better than most of the non floral guys get sends over there.
