Kroger now wants their self checkout attendants to be extra annoyingly friendly to their customers. Saying hello/goodbye to everyone within a 5 foot radius. Going up to each and every customer on a self checkout lane and bugging them about their day. And the worst of all... have a huge giant permanent smile on your face while you're doing it.
I would rather just relax and say or do what comes naturally instead of using the same rehearsed script they try to force-feed. Less annoying that way. Give it a shot and see what goes from there.

Or you could just keep blowing them in the back room; you're excellent at that, hell, there might even be some tips in it! I'd demand at least 10%!!

I've been confronted by management several times. Relaxed and natural is not good enough.
I've had a very reassuring conversation with the union about this and I've come to a decision.
If Kroger wants a fake robot, I'm going to give them a fake robot. I'm going to put on that huge creepy fake ass smile and I'm going to look at every customer and I don't care if it creeps them out. Kroger wants creepy, they get creepy.
According to the union, management can't fire me for the creepy smile. Hey, it's what corporate wants. Sure my face is going to be a little bit sore at the end of the day, but I don't care, it's a small price to pay.
Every customer within my five foot radius is going to receive that creepy smile along with a generic greeting/thanking. Oh, Mr Customer, you don't like my huge awkward smile? I... don't... care...

Glas your store was part of the new program introduced. Their targeting stores who have lack luster associates such as yourself to either do better or kroger will no longer need your poor services. Its simple really. Like some of the people on here, learn to VALUE US!!!!

Throw in a high-pitched crazed giggle once in a while. Lol
Luckily Ive not been talked to about this. I say hi, thank you, bye, ask if they need help but Im not gonna chase people down, thats ridiculous and retailers still dont understand that customers really hate it when employees do that. Some people dont want a conversation about their day, they just want to buy their stuff and go. Most people dont like the checkout experience its just something they have to do. Im friendly but refuse to be a Robot employee like Kroger wants.
Half the time I get a bunch of technology haters that tell me about how much they hate machines and automation and how Im gonna be replaced in 10 years and act like they were forced to use self checkout against their will when there are normal checkouts with actual cashiers up front. Then after they stop complaining long enough to finish checking out they then were like "wow that was so fast and easy"

You nailed it, friend. I've also seen people who flat out refuse to go to U-Scan. And they won't budge short of being threatened by gunpoint. Can't blame them, though.
Why is it so hard to be nice? VALUE US! We contribute to your paycheck. If you dont like that then find a job mopping floors.
All bull**** aside, no it isn't. However, it helps that you be nice to us, as well. I've read your posts and this is what kept occurring: VALUE ME VALUE ME BOW.DOWN GROVEL I WILL TREAT YOU LIKE DIRT BUT YOU WILL DO WHAT I SAY yadda yadda yadda. Now put yourself in our boots for a moment and consider all of that being forced at you. Kind of stinks, doesn't it? Like someone who didn't brush themselves or however you put it. Simply put, if you want us to VALUE YOU, you could try to VALUE US as well. If you come into the store with the way you are now, YOU'RE SCREWED. And another thing. Again all bull**** aside, if we were actually paid by the customer like you say instead of hourly, then yes it would be small. But we're not car salespeople trying to get a commission. So try treating us the way you want to be treated. It might surprise you.

You don't get it nor will you ****ing ever will. It's seriously doubtful that you will ever pull your head out of your ass with or without help. **** off.
Guys can you please stop replying to this troll. They have a sad, boring life because they have to come on here and say the same spiel to everyone. They know they are so unpleasant that no one wants to talk to them, they scream about being valued and Im sure they are hell to deal with in real life and employees probably do all they can to avoid them as much as possible. No one is gonna value some unpleasant customer that wants to complain about everything and push people around. They are gonna do everything they can to get them out and get away from them and go on with their day. Thats the truth.

So, try a little kindness, it goes a long way.
To bad thats not the way it works at Kroger. A little knowledge goes even longer.

you do realize with out the customer none of us have a job with Kroger
none of us can pay our rent or buy groceries to eat food
so yes i can understand being friendly and greeting them with a smile and asking them how are you today sir
no matter how ****ty some of us think of our jobs with Kroger are, its better than not having a paycheck each week

Like the other guy said, you should just quit. its apparent you are not Kroger front end material. You cant handle the expectations they require. you need to grovel a little to us. You dont seem very friendly and kinda sound a bit lazy to be honest. just bow down a little more to customers.
We are not supposed to give tips. The customer is.
Speaking of tips, now I'm paranoid if a mystery shopper tried to target me by giving me a $10 tip. They repeatedly tried to give me the tip, and I repeatedly reminded them we cannot accept tips.
