Cart pushers are the least valued in the company, the people who bring in just a few carts at a time get praised while us people who bring in 12 carts at a time, without customer disruption get in trouble for doing so, We do use our cart straps and on several occasions we have had managers tell us it is ok, even higher up people saying the same, as it is a busy store and needs people like us to keep it filled, as I have worked there a year I now make a measly 10.80 I work during the winter and summer without complaints but now I draw the line, I'm tired of working my tail off outside for 8+ hours to keep the lobby filled. But he is the thing, I could be working as a bagger and make the same amount of money but be in the coooool ac or the hot heater. And cashiers who are just starting (11 and hour I believe) make more than I do. I should be a move valued employee, as without me the store wouldn't be running as effective as it could be. Now, this could be said for all positions BUT higher ups could easily replace other positions. That's why people don't complain. But I dare you to find someone who is willing to work 8 or more hours outside in the heat or rain or freezing cold and be paid less or equal to the people inside in the climate controlled environment. I agree 100%. Pushing in 12 cart's at a time? I used to be able to do that and back in the day I did. We had the small Kroger store cart's were in front of registers and a huge Window in front of the cart's. Several times that Window got busted by someone pushed cart's a little too hard. Anyway that was before 2005 and I was younger I can only push 4 to 6 now because I have been on Utility and my store don't seem to do like others I never have lot duty meaning stay on the lot hours at a time. I could not handle that the morning courtesy clerk he has been there a few month's before me early 1990's he stay's out most of the morning because they don't usually schedule another courtesy clerk until 10 or 11 sometimes 9.
I certainly agree that many of those who working as a courtesy clerk are not being appreciated enough when it comes to gathering the carts from outside the store.
Just try not to push yourself out there, it truly isn't worth the stress. No matter how much fear your managers or supervisors project onto you, there is only so much that you can do. If the lobby is extremely lacking with carts and you're not slacking around outside, the higher ups should be smart enough to pull other associates from their respective departments and have them help you. It's their job to delegate other jobs to other people and ensure everything runs smoothly (or at least to that extent, in an ideal world).
Unfortunately, things are not as they would seem. Don't beat yourself up over it, some managers and supervisors can be out of touch with reality and have unrealistic expectations. Especially when they expect one courtesy clerk to gather all the carts outside for hours on end with little to no help.
