The Uscan software now has a security feature where the overhead camera records customers as they scan. When a security check kicks in, and it suspects a scanned item isn't what was placed in the bagging area, it forces us, the attendants to look at a video of what the customer scanned.
It's kind of weird having to look at the video while the customer is standing right there looking at the same screen.

Did they install a monitor at the Cashier Station to view the video? When SCO first was introduced, they has cameras over the scale so the clerk would key in PLU's. I do not see the camera thing lasting too long...... I can just see the PR nightmare.
No, no monitor. They haven't changed a thing to the attendant station.
Although, they recently installed this new cart stopping device on all the registers and Uscans, presumably to work with the BOB item system, to stop customers walking away with groceries that haven't been paid for.
It's not online yet, they tell me it'll be a couple months before it's active.

Perhaps they think by having the customer see themselves on video, that it becomes a sort of theft deterrent. I guess it should be interesting to see how the majority of customers react to this.

What is sad about that is that u scan is supposed to cut down on the amount of staff for the front-end, but now Kroger is spending money on these security devices to prevent u scan theft.
Pretty similar to how Target and Walmart have them now, as soon as you step to a SCO, you see yourself right on a monitor and the camera staring you right in the face. Same with our aisle cams for GM and after the whole Tide Pod craze took off, that's always a fun one to explain to customers as to why a cam is aimed down the aisle in front of the detergent.

Why it probably remains in the detergent aisle well after the "craze" has passed yes, but when we first put them up, yes they knew exactly why they were there. They know perfectly well why the GM cam remains in place
Actually, I believe Mr. Frontenac is talking about a different camera system. Yes, some store have the Camera/Monitor on each lane and the Camera/Monitor hanging from the ceiling. They have started to test a new camera that is watching the customer tied into the security program of the SCO. If a weight is different, extra items detected or whatever....the system will log the time and most likely item information for review. Its going to be interesting basically almost calling out people for some kind of theft.
The company will get away with anything it can everywhere it can. Always testing. The cops know that security video will not be available if Kroger breaks the law.
