Depending on your pay, it can be difficult. I make $20/hr in overnight grocery. Who's going to start me off near that, with the benefits? I've got a 4-or-so year plan to leave, though, after I finish a big project at home and then go back to community college for the job I'm hoping I'll enjoy enough to stay at.
They've definitely suckered me in for life, most likely Unless I go back to school for something at some point maybe. Unfortunately there's only a few factories in my area that MIGHT start me out at the same or more than I now make after 6 years at Kroger.... But it'll probably be a lot harder work, physically anyways. They probably won't be as accommodating with the restricted availability as Kroger is. Kroger has decent benefits which isn't the norm with the other places around here. And lastly, I don't think any of the factories here are union. I live in a state where, if no union, your employer can fire you at any time without any reason. It sucks, but unless unions become more commonplace in my area, I'll probably be sticking around with Kroger.

Well... $18.91 plus the overnight dollar, and there's always that little bit of overtime. It's all relative, though. Our minimum wage is currently 11.10 and will be 12 come January. 20 isn't worth as much here in CO as it might be elsewhere. Too many people moving here driving up the rent.
Steady income. But let's face it this is a pay check job with no shiny bells nor whistles.

Union. Pros and cons. After working enough union jobs a union is nice.
We have a good medical, dental, vision plan that's let's face it isn't that bad and very affordable.
I get paid journeyman wage and lets face it $20.50/hr isn't all that bad. We get paid more than others. The average pay in my area is minimum wage or maxing out at $15/hr. In my area $15/hr isn't livable. Most jobs in my area require a bachelor degree and mid grad jobs top out between $15-21/hr and lets face it I'm earning about the same.
There are many who ONLY work here for the benefits...I can say honestly that the insurance beats what a lot of companies offer and I've had to pay for a similar medical bill with the insurance and without the insurance, and believe me, it DOES make a difference!
Of course, if you wanna try going it alone with another company who may not be as generous, more power to ya!
