So today I came in and didn't realize I wasn't scheduled. I tried to clock in and it didn't let me, but sometimes our time clocks are wonky and I've been unable to clock in on days when I was scheduled before, so I wrote it down. When the manager found out what happened he was unhappy and ended up sending me home after I'd been there 4 hours. He said "today won't count." Is it legal to not pay for that? I get that I shouldn't have been there, but I still did four hours of work.

They have to pay you for any hours worked.  Grieve it with the union if they delete the 4 hours you were there. 

The managers should have sent you home as soon as it was realized that you were not scheduled.  The message on the time clock should have said, "See Manager" or "ring restricted".  That would be the time to double check the schedule.  Their problem for not managing you.

Take a picture of your schedule on Saturday after noon.  That way you have a posted store copy of your schedule and a time stamp.  A friend got out of a no call, no show write-up with a picture.  The schedule can not be changed after that time without mutual consent per most contracts.  The online E schedule does not always reflect the posted schedule if changes have been made.

I tell all new people to keep track of their hours daily and check the hours against the pay stub weekly.  Errors do happen.  By the time it is realized, it is hard to remember what hours you worked a week ago.

 It is against the law for an employer to withhold wages for work that has already been completed.  The only thing they can do is take four hours out of your schedule later this week.

 Well that's fine then. I don't mind not working for four hours at a later date. I just don't want them to not pay me for today.

Thanks, if they do end up not paying me for whatever reason I'll report it to the union.  Unfortunately our store has had a glitch with the time clocks giving out "ring restricted" messages to scheduled people since we renovated in March. So I didn't think anything of it when I got it today.

If a member of store management didn't write their initials next to your in/out time on the clipboard/time correction sheet then the payroll person probably won't put it in the system and thus you won't get paid for the hours come your next paycheck, so unless you know for a fact that one of them did, you better check sometime before Sunday afternoon as Sunday morning (before 9:00AM, I believe) is the cutoff time for when all corrections must be made.

Not saying you can't/won't be paid if you miss the cutoff, but the process becomes longer/more aggravating if you gotta get those hours added on to a future paycheck.

Legally they still have to pay you. File a grievance with the union. Contact your rep.
