I've been cashiering for some time now and my ring tinder is only about 18. Any tips on increasing IPM and does it even matter at all?

The best way to increase ring tender is to lower your time in a transaction. Getting things ready before the transaction starts. Like having the kroger card on hand before you begin and passing items quickly across the scanner while knowing a majority of common fruit item numbers (for when they don't scan). Bagging after/while the customer is paying instead of as you go also helps IPM. Asking if they need anything from the service desk and the like before you begin helps too.

You can also ask your CSM for tips or check the posted for your highest scorer and asking them. Just be aware that morning clerks will always have a higher IPM due to the differences in the morning/afternoon and evening crowds. (morning/afternoon tend to be slower and have fewer items per transaction)

Just don't stress yourself too much over it as there are going to be customers who will throw wrenches in everything. It's all about minimizing downtime.

I wouldn't worry about Ring Tender, its been a fault measurement for a long while! Ask your FES if there are any Stores making the goal or close? (The answer would be NO).

If anything, just work on getting your Items Per Min. up. When scanning don't look for UPC's, you will find the sweet spot on the scanner. When your scanning/passing the items, have about 1-2 inches over the glass bottom piece of the scanner. When scanning pass the item from your right to left hand and if possible put some spin in the item when passing it. As long as your store has the newer scanner most items will scan this way, unless your hand/finders are on the UPC or the UPC is on the top of the packaging.

no sale sign on to pause your time when you're not doing scans or processing some sort of data. It means punching in your pass word a couple hundred times a day. Get quick at scanning and when it's time for a customer to pay pause your time. Wait for the processing payment beep then hit payment format.

For sure. I think our store kind of uses it as a friendly competition between all the cashiers. Making it a competition kind of motivates us to out do one another, which is smart for business

I secure my terminal between customers. That way they can't scan anything while I am helping the previous customer bag. I really don't think they measure it so much anymore, due to everything that's going on.

Produce absolutely kills your ring tender since you aren't supposed to key it in anymore.

Keep a banana sticker handy, learn where the stickers generally are, and learn the PLU's of produce items that don't have stickers.  When you are off the clock, take a gander at nonsense items in produce every now and then so gobo root and red Fresno peppers and such don't torpedo your orders.

Try to get the shopper's card first, and ideally after the belt has been loaded.  It's difficult since customers don't really cooperate or even find this offensive.

Lock the register between orders so customers don't scan their card before you are ready.  If they sneak it in, you can void the order since the dollar amount is still zero and then restart when you are ready.

Try to keep the favor of the courtesy clerks.  Makes all the difference for large orders.

I always hit "EFT" after I'm done scanning, although I'm not sure this is worthwhile.  If the customer isn't an idiot, the transaction processes immediately.  If they are shocked that they have to pay and can't find their payment card in their card deck or Hefty-brand purse (or both), it probably damages tender time while preserving ipm.
