At my store the tolerance was only 7 minutes. I would not be surprised if 9 minutes is counted as late/tardy.

Depends on the contract.  That does not sound right.

In most stores, there is a 7 minute grace period.  9 minutes late is a tardy if they stayed to work the rest of the shift.  If they went home, then it would be an absence.

I have always been told that if a person is 2 hours late, I don't have to let them clock in and can send them home.  It gets marked as a no call, no show.

Stores are so understaffed, that a person would need to be delusional to get upset about someone being 9 minutes late and calling it an absence.

There is a miscommunication somewhere.

If I am running 9 minutes late, I am going to clock in 15 minutes late.

It depends upon how much of a hard @$$ they want to be. Some stores are very strict and others not so much. Store your son might work at is very strict to attendance protocol. There is a grace period of 7 minutes late to allow you to punch and receive full pay. It's not there to abuse but rather allow associates running late to not be dinged 15 min pay. If you're over that 7 minute leeway yes you're late. Some stores will fight you and state that even if you're after shift start you're late. You can contest it with a union grievance but it's up to them to fight it or not. It's like getting a speeding ticket for 6 mph over the speed limit.

I loved that 7 minutes when I worked nights 1pm to 7pm  I would clock in 12:53pm and clock out 6:53pm. I had my watch set 7 minutes fast. A supervisor confronted me one day and I smiled showed him my watch and walked away. Next day he said not to leave early I told him I clocked in 12:53.
