Can they do this?

Today I was behind 2 people getting ready to pay for something to eat on my break when I hear the all too familiar tinny sound of glass breaking; someone broke a glass of spaghetti sauce in the front end. My FE Manager called me over to clean it. I told her I was in line getting ready to pay for my items when she called again. I called over to her and said I was shevdid

in the middle of my transaction and that I can't (won't) just stop in the middle of paying. I finish paying then go over to her. That's when all hell breaks loose. She chews me out saying that " I'm not supposed to say that." That I could suspend the order and go back and pay when I am finished. She didn't yell at me per se, but I felt she was in the wrong. Was I wrong to pay for my items first then go over to clean the spill?

Yes and no. If you're on your union mandated break that comes first. Spills come first as well but they should of called someone else to handle it. If they ligitly sent you to break that's on them. It was very rude of them to chew you out like that and very unprofessional. If it's a reoccuring issue then you can file a union grievance for verbal harassment and not being able to comfortably take your ten.  If you just randomly go on break then it's sort of on you. Big deal. Rather than throw a tantrum do the spill then finish break. You can ask your union rep but they'll more 'n likely tell you the same thing. This is why you do your shopping after work not during your ten minute break.

If you're a cashier in the middle of an order they must let you finish the line then replace you with someone else. When you're in the register customers come first spills second. The manager should of grabbed someone else. It was very rude and unprofessional of her to close the line down while she sent you on a cleaning errand.
