Curious question (please take this in light manner). How do you reach the 5 year mark?

Also I wonder if the kroger culture differs between coast to coast.

Do the minimum time requirements, I was full time so after my 8 hours I left, I don't do 6 days or call in.

Saying No to coming in was my way on protecting myself from burnout, especially when you the one that they alway call 1st

1. ONLY do what you can REALISTICLY do.
2. DO NOT cover for another person unless asked. If you offer, even once it WILL be expected ALL the time.
3. Set your priorities in order. Work from the most important than go on down the line.
4. Take your breaks and lunches. Do not cut them short due to business needs. It can wait. They can handle it.
5. Stretch periodically throughout the day. Be safe.
Remember: Safety 1st everything else comes second. Even customer service.

West. Company does it like gang recruitment. A lot of my coworkers cannot imagine bettering themselves for a variety of reasons. If you are an evil bastard you may thrive as long as you do as you are told and keep your mouth shut. Laziness helps. Being beaten down to a slave-like condition helps.

You're more right than you may know.

I worked in retail for 15 years and that slave mentality / gang battery is exactly accurate. They prey on you not having any solid sense of self or ambition to rise above your simple conditions. It makes it easier to dominate and exploit you into being more productive which = more $$ for them.

Smarter, more ethical businesses (if any exist any more) would reward your efforts and make you a part of the success formula; retail just does its management through fear and bullying.

If you can do better by going elsewhere, do so. Only you can decide that, tho.

Customer service is above all. You need to satisfy the customers needs to no ends no matter the situation. The customers always talk to the associates with kindness and respect! Managers encourage employees to go above and beyond for every customer that enters the doors. You just always need to remember to VALUE US!! We pay your wages weekly and Kroger pays you guys good money to go on cruises or trips to various attractions all over the unites states. So just remember, the customer is ALWAYS right and to VALUE US!!

Do you have a family member in upper management who can secure a good position for you?

Otherwise, the union or the threat thereof make it very difficult to actually get fired.

Realistically, the most difficult part of reaching 5 years is financial.

Rent has increased a third this year in my city and in many parts of the country, and that's pretty rough at near-minimum-wage part-time-only.

That sucks, sure, except that Kroger is so terribly at scheduling that you can't realistically get a second job or go to school.

If you can hold your temper and your mouth, and remember basic instructions, you could work for Kroger until you die.

But only if you live with parents or grandma or have a roommate or five.

If you have a high school diploma, you probably should look elsewhere.
