Return scams = high right now.

If your customers have a high number of returns or have a high number of returns of the same item time and time again this is a scam. 1-3 times is okay and understandable. But repeated time and time again don't honor it. It's a scam.

If you suspect a customer pulled an item off a shelf then demands a return without a receipt this is a scam.

It isn't uncommon for customers to steal items from one store then wonder from store to store to return it.

If a customer comes in with a copy of the receipt not official receipt you can refuse the return.

If a customer tries to purchase $2k worth of gift cards this is generally a scam purchase with generally a stolen card.

If you see a customer repeatedly trying to return the same item over and over again it's a scam.

If you only see select customers in the store when scam rings are occurring and you know that individual is part of that ring. It's a scam.

If you know a customer gets an item and later comes back and says they didn't get that item; you don't have to honor it. You will learn your regulars from your questionable clients.

If a customer says it's this price and you know it's not. You can physically check the price and honor or refuse it. I had a lady kept demanding 50% off on cakes but failed to provide the coupon for it. That was a scam.

If a customer comes in with an obviously fake coupon it is not required to honor it. Refuse.

If a customer does not have valid id you are no longer required to sell liquor for them. The 21+ button is removed from our systems and will piss off a bunch of customers. If you're 80+ you're no longer immediately by-passed. If you throw a tantrum over it we can refuse sale.

After your eyes are open to all the b.s. that occurs in a retail environment; you will be appalled at how many people steal as well. Company policy says just let them have it. Sad but unfortunately true.

You nailed it 100%. We have one lady we call The Lightbulb Lady. She will say she brought in xxx amount of lightbulbs to which she does have a reciept, however, the reciept is crumpled, faded, and does NOT match the product she has on hand. She knows not to hit up the older cashiers, so she goes for the younger new hire cashiers and tries to bully them into a refund. Stand up to her and you'll hear her enraged Karen call all over the store.
She stopped coming by for now at least.

We get thr gift card scams mainly involving seniors over the holidays. One poor elderly man was instructed his "daughter" (who was with him) to bail her out of jail. To send the funds use Visa, american express, or iTunes giftcard.
He looked at me confused so I got in the phone with him and said, " I'm going to beat the f*cking **** out if you you Inbred piece of ****. Call this number again b*tch and see what happens. I am HIS daughter you sl*tty wh*re." They got so enraged they started cursing in their native tongue to which I responded "This is America bi*tch learn our language!! More screaming then I hung up.
The daughter who was using the bathroom at the moment came out and the story was relayed to her. She laughed and gave me a hug thanking me.
I told her to be aware of scammers and her father as well.

What happens when a customer buys something one week on a MEGA sale for about half price, then returns it a week later after the sale ended when its full price again?
I've always wondered if people are clever enough to scam that way-  like its legit, it Was purchased...  but how impossible would it be to refund that kind of sale?
Easy $20 all day, do it at a few stores, boom you made your quota for the day, go steal a case of beer.

I saw this one woman use a physical coupon on Febreeze airspray, buying up these holiday cans that were on clearance for like a dollar a piece, and with her coupon they were basically free, just paying pennies in tax.  She loaded up like 4 bags of them and left, and while sure- maybe she was going to stockpile Evergreen Winterland Fantasy in her cabinet at home, maybe she was going to try returning them somewhere else especially somewhere that hadn't put them on clearance just yet.

I think it should just be a requirement Everywhere.
No receipt?  NO REFUND.

We have the policy anything over $5.00 NEEDS a reciept. Don't need a reciept? That's cool, then you DO NOT need a refund.

No no no.

You just have to do what my store does.

It's real easy.  You just underpay so violently that you literally can't trust one single cashier (and most management) to run the desk.

The desk often closes outright before noon.  It's great.  Really really great.  Almost all returns are fraudulent anyways.

The desk is closed, sorry.  Please come back tomorrow and don't forget your receipt.
