I work click list and sometimes we have to sub out of stock items. Some subs are system suggested and I NEVER follow the suggestions unless it makes sense.
Sometimes the click list customers "spit out" (reject) subs given. To avoid this from happening, I write down the upc code from the original item pictured and sub it for a different brand of thr same item.
For example: say the customer wants a 2 liter bottle of Kroger Coke and all we have us Coca-Cola brand. Yes, it's more expensive and the customer will reject it more than likely, but to prevent it from being rejected, I use the upc of the Kroger brand coke in place of the coca cola brand and they end up keeping the sub.
I only do this on occasion and if I know for a fact the acceptable sub is out of stock or does not make sense.
So far our out of stocks have gone down and there are fewer rejected subs.

The computer removes the kro coke from the boh but not the real coke when you do those types of scans. So, if the kro coke is on backstock, there will now be more.

That is true. Especially if Kro coke is 'slow selling.' You do a sub to prevent a customer from rejecting the sub and that's fine and dandy, but do it correctly and charge correctly. If you do it too much the computer thinks the slow movers are selling quickly and tells the ones that order to order more. They do and now we have more 'slow selling product' in the backroom.
Not to mention the store looses out on money.
Do the subs correctly, and if the customer rejects it, so what?
Also, customers may tell their friends who expect the same deal they got in click list AND WILL expect it if they come in physically to shop. They'll find out it is YOU that gave the sub and say xxx does it all the time for me when I shop click list. Why can't i get the same deal in person?

Not only that, but it sounds like the OP is trying to force the customer to take an item he doesn't want. If the customer says they don't want the substitution, then don't try to sneak it in.
