I've worked at a couple different stores and found that they had totally different music playing at the store. I know there are different "stations" that they can play but the 2nd store I worked at had only a small array of music meaning that you heard the same handful of songs everyday. It was weird, they played a lot of pop music from 2 or 3 years before. Ashlee Simpson, Bo Bice, Clay Aiken, Rob Thomas, etc. After about 2-3 days of working that store you knew every song word for word.
At my regular store there are many many more songs. They play a few good 90's songs (from goo goo dolls, fastball, greenday, etc) but it's mostly crappy versions of songs that I would really like if it had been the original artist....they'll play a lot of pop or rock versions whereas the country versions are better but hey that's just my opinion. The only 3 country songs they do play are songs that you'd hear on light rock stations (songs by Jessica Andrews, Shania Twain, etc).
There are also a lot of songs that they used to play that were awesome that they just don't play anymoreBon Jovi's "Livin On a Prayer" for instance.
Recently however our store began playing a bunch of tv theme songs as well as decent newer songs from Plain White Tees, Jordin Sparks, Leona Lewis, etc. It was awesome for about a week then BAM gone forever. feels bad man.
Now we're back to the same old crappy pop from the likes of Eiffel 65 Backstreet Boys BB Mak N'Sync Michael McDonald Brittney Spears
I'm pretty sure all the store music is the same, for the most part. The store just gets it in via satellite radio, and can only control the volume of it.
the manager at the second store i worked at told me it was the "managers choice" as to what we got to listen to...
this is why they had decent music while most of ours is crap. I still can't figure out why we'd play all these good songs for one week then all of a sudden they're gone forever. here's an idea, let's boost morale for a few days then knock em back down a peg. i actually think they like this at my store
Now I here the same music everyone else heres too or at least i thought I did. Was in my stre and had to go pick up items from anotther up-scale market place and they did seem to have a differant type of music and format going on. Two others also said it seems to be differant at that and a few stores that cater to up-scale clientail as opposed to others.
Does anyone know if this is true or if there is more that one format for managers to pic and play in the store?
@grumpy. I've never taken the time to do it, but what you could do is call a store and ask for a certain department and when you're on hold often times you'll hear the exact music playing in the store. Hang up and call another store, see if it's the same or not. Not exactly accurate but if the songs are the same that would maybe answer your question. It's weird they act like it's some kind of secret.
You know it's true...You can find out a lot by listening to different stores' "hold music". I hear a lot of the same stuff in Kroger's, but I'll hear those same songs in Walgreen's, Meijer's, and elsewhere. Trust me, folks, this is not confined to one store, or one chain, for that matter. I've heard the same crap in restaurants. And I KNOW it's the same!!! Once in a while, you'll hear some new stuff by a few unknowns like Dave Barnes (who I thought at first was Jason Mraz), Stretch Princess, and Yellowcard, but lately it's the same stuff by people like Ashlee Simpson (Funny thing is...She's still invisible...So's Clay Aiken , for that matter!!!) and friends. I'll tell you one thing...that Simple Plan song, "Welcome to my life" is making more and more sense every day! You know what's odd...I was in a Burger King once, and the whole time, they played standards from the '40's and '50's. I've walked through Krogers in the past, and I know one that played jazz and light instrumentals all day (Of course, this was maybe 10 years ago). There were Farmer Jacks that would play country one day, come back another day, they were playing all R & B, and then another day, the pop you hear all the time. Once in a while, I'd hear some "oldies" from people like Gene Vincent and The Coasters, or you'd hear some dance music, like Eiffel 65 (Was that Tom Jones singing "Burning down the house"?!!!). Not one store I've been in has ever played the same exact music as another one. And some stores just seem to get a broader, more upscale selection. I've noticed lots of differences between grocery stores, restaurants, bookstores, coffee shops, drug stores, etc. Of course, what's really bad is when you hear the same songs in the morning, and that same playlist is playing in the evening. It's as if they have a tape somewhere, and they just rewound it back to the beginning. Even worse is the rare occasion that you hear the same song being played less than 10-15 minutes from when you first heard it!!! And that whole week of TV themes for a couple hours...That was unbelievable !!! I almost couldn't wait until the regularly scheduled crap to come back on, so I'd get some variety!!! You could almost time the exact moment that "Star Trek" song would come on!!! I mean...COME ON!!! Seriously??? Oh, well...Maybe one day, we'll all have radios implanted into our brains, and we'll get to choose the station coming out of them...Then again, I probably watch too many movies!!!
Oh, and by the way, I can probably tell you what 80-90% of the music is that emanantes from that Kroger channel...Just in case, one of those songs is driving you nuts!!! When it becomes THAT predictable, it's probably time to shake things up a bit...
But then again, I guess people like predictability...
Here's a sample playlist of some of the stuff I hear...
DAVE BARNES Little Lies YELLOWCARD Light up the sky STRETCH PRINCESS Freakshow ANASTACIA You'll never be alone LEONA LEWIS I will be PLAIN WHITE T'S 1,2,3,4 SIMPLE PLAN Welcome to my life AVRIL LAVIGNE When you're gone ASHLEE SIMPSON Invisible A FINE FRENZY Goodbye KELLY SWEET Raincoat MERCYME So long self LEONA LEWIS Footprints in the sand AVRIL LAVIGNE Fall to pieces KELLY CLARKSON Already gone THE FRAY Over my head (Cable Car) TAYLOR DAYNE Beautiful ANASTACIA One day in your life JASON MRAZ Wordplay BON JOVI Lost highway BUCKCHERRY Sorry TAYLOR HICKS Just to feel that way JORDIN SPARKS No air
Every day, at least several of these are bound to be heard in a Kroger somewhere...
there's this one song that never fails, hear it everyday and makes me want to scream, it's the one about the cat in the cradle at the silver spoon, little boy blue and the man in the moon.... YUCK!
@anonymous, our store has none of the ones you listed:( we have -among many others---
Green Day - Time of your life Fastball - the way bon jovi - it's my life marc cohn - walking in memphis All 4 one - I swear incubus - drive semisonic - closing time santana - maria maria brian mcknight - back at one avril lavigne - sk8r boi bsb - as long as you love me
there's a woman singer version of "Sweet Child O Mine" fffffuuuuuuuuccc
basically out of 100 or so songs maybe there's 5 decent ones. feels bad man

Oh, I hear a lot of the same ones you mention, too. By the way, the "Cat's in the cradle" song is Harry Chapin, and it is Sheryl Crow doing the dreadful Guns N' Roses cover. Like I said...predictable!
Every time I hear "Closing Time", I almost wish I had a drink in hand, but alas, no...that would not be the proper thing. It's just the feeling I get when I hear it. Ugh! If you worked in a 24 hour store, that would be the ultimate irony!
KATE VOEGELE 99 Times BOB WELCH Sentimental Lady LIONEL RICHIE Just for you THE DOOBIE BROTHERS Toulouse Street (This one really annoys me!) MICHAEL MCDONALD The Enemy Within (He used to be OK, but he's WAY overplayed...I used to say the same about HALL & OATES) KIMBERLY LOCKE I could KIMBERLY LOCKE Band of gold PATTI LABELLE If you asked me to RUBEN STUDDARD Flying without wings RUBEN STUDDARD I need an angel CLAY AIKEN This is the night BARRY MANILOW Unchained melody (Don't mess with THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS,OK? I'm just sayin'...) TAYLOR HICKS Do I make you proud? CARRIE UNDERWOOD Some hearts VIENNA TENG Harbor (This one is become so ubiquitous, it kills me...) SARAH MCLACHLAN Possession (And it used to be PAULA COLE that bothered me...now this!) KYLIE MINOGUE Slow KYLIE MINOGUE Come into my world KYLIE MINOGUE Can't get you outta my head CRANBERRIES Analyze (This one is really getting overplayed lately...) CRANBERRIES Linger ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS It ends tonight NINA GORDON Tonight and the rest of my life JOHNNY RZEZNIK I'm still here KID ROCK Cold and empty (Yet...another one that's had it's fair share of air)
It almost makes me long to hear "Blue orchid" from THE WHITE STRIPES again...
Oh, that INCUBUS song, "Drive" is way overplayed...but I would be remiss not to mention these, too...
1. KATRINA CARLSON Suddenly beautiful 2. KATRINA CARLSON Count on me 3. STAIND Everything changes 4. STAIND So far away 5. SARAH MCLACHLAN Adia 6. CHICAGO If she would have been faithful 7. JASON MRAZ I'm yours 8. DIDO Don't leave home 9. DIDO Here with me 10. DIDO White Flag
And in case you didn't know, here's a few more from the really bad, very ironic playlist file:
1. BON JOVI Who says you can't go home (The boss that wants you to work an extra hour because someone called in sick, and the only other guy is on vacation, that's who!) 2. BETTE MIDLER Night and day (The schedules worked by Kroger employees, also symbolic of the differences between people you work with, people you work for, and places you work at...I've never seen ONE Kroger run or managed exactly like another one...each one is different....heck, they don't even LOOK the same!) 3. NELLY FURTADO I'm like a bird (Like to fly away, but I can't...Aren't these all ironic?) 4. GIN BLOSSOMS Allison Road 5. GIN BLOSSOMS Follow you down 6. JACK JOHNSON Sitting, waiting, wishing (for a better job, perhaps, for things to change, a nap when I get home, for a new radio staton to excite me...) 7. PAOLO NUTINI Last request (Grant my last request...for a better radio station...) 8. COUNTING CROWS Accidentally in love 9. PAY THE GIRL Freeze right here 10. SANTANA Why don't you and I 11. DAVE MATTHEWS BAND Satellite 12. DAVE MATTHEWS BAND The space between 13. DAVE MATTHEWS BAND You and me 14. JACK JOHNSON Breakdown (That's a nervous breakdown from working he's talking about...) 15. JACK JOHNSON Good people (You don't sing "Where'd all the good people go?" in a grocery store...They're few and far between...or they're on vacation when "all hell breaks loose"...) 16. JAMES TAYLOR It's growing (Not my bank account...) 17. JAMES TAYLOR Whenever you're ready (Total antithesis of "I need it done now!") 18. MICHAEL BUBLE Save the last dance for me 19. PAUL MCCARTNEY Fine Line (There is a fine line...between chaos and an outright "cluster****"...sometimes it's what's known as ORGANIZED CHAOS!) 20. PAUL MCCARTNEY Ever present past 21. PAUL MCCARTNEY Hope of deliverance (from the idiots that surround me....) 22. STARSHIP Nothing's gonna stop us now
...DOES ANYONE REALIZE THE IRONY OF THESE SONGS BEING PLAYED IN A GROCERY STORE??? YOU HEAR THE WORDS SOMETIMES, AND GO...ARE YOU KIDDING ME???
23. GRAYSON HUGH Bring it all back 24. GRAYSON HUGH Turn back the hands of time 25. RYAN CABRERA Photo (One more shot? Can I "shoot" the loudspeakers?) 26. RYAN CABRERA True 27. SUGAR RAY Someday (aka NEVER...) 28. SUGAR RAY When it's over (It's NEVER over! It will NEVER BE over!) 29. SUGAR RAY A shot of laughter (Pretty much sums it up...I laugh every day! I have to, to keep from crying...See Justin Timberlake below) 30. PRETENDERS Don't get me wrong (I love this place, but once in a while...) 31. MISSY HIGGINS Where I stood 32. CHANTAL KREVIAZUK In this life (I thought these last two were the same people...) 33. MATT NATHANSON Come on get higher 34. JESSICA SIMPSON Angels 35. ROBBIE WILLIAMS Angels (And one day, they play these back to back...and you wish for angels to carry you away...) 36. FLEETWOOD MAC/WILSON PHILLIPS Go your own way (These are pretty much interchangeable...) 37. WILSON PHILLIPS Flesh and blood 38. FLEETWOOD MAC Peacekeeper 39. DANA GLOVER Thinking over (Who has time to think? Not on a delivery day you don't...) 40. SIMPLY RED Sunrise 41. DURAN DURAN Sunrise (Different songs...same purpose...to annoy...) 42. MATT NATHANSON All we are (Every day's the start of something beautiful...Really? I thought every day was the start of more work, left over from the previous day...) 43. SIMPLY RED Stars 44. ONEREPUBLIC All the right moves (I notice that a lot of the songs played were written by OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder...Coincidence?...Oh, and by the way, YEAH, WE'RE GOIN' DOWN!!! It's in the song, people...listen to the lyrics!) 45. AVRIL LAVIGNE Complicated (I've often wondered why people have to go and make things so complicated...) 46. AVRIL LAVIGNE Nobody's home (Some people don't even leave a light on upstairs, either!) 47. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE Cry me a river (I'd like to...but all my tears left with the blood and sweat an hour ago...) 48. AVRIL LAVIGNE Keep holding on (I'd like to...but my rope is wearing thin...and my sanity's falling in...and still, I bear it with a grin, because it's all about CUSTOMERS FIRST!) 49. JERMAINE JACKSON Do what you do (let me do what I do...and I'll do it!) 50. MADONNA Sorry (I don't want to hear...I don't want to know...I think I know people like this!) 51. RICHARD MARX Endless summer nights 52. RICHARD MARX I'm ready to fly (See Nelly Furtado...) 53. PRINCE I would die 4 U (Love song to Kroger)
and now for a few that really drive me nuts...
54. SURFACE Shower me with your love 55. VERVE PIPE Never let you down (I will never let you down...unless I'm the night guy, and you're the morning guy...) 56. PAT MCGEE BAND Beautiful ways 57. JOHN MCLAUGHLIN Beautiful disaster (These two are BOTH beautiful disasters...Just stunning in their ubiquity!!! These two make me lose my beautiful mind...) 58. BLUE OCTOBER Calling you (I know this comes from the "American Wedding" soundtrack...but there have been times that I'VE HEARD THIS SAME EXACT SONG SEVERAL TIMES IN A DAY!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???) 59. CHRIS ISAAK We let her down (I dig Chris' stuff, but this song just makes me want to scream...OOOHHH!!! 60. CYNDI LAUPER & SARAH MCLACHLAN Time after time (There's only so much a man can take...) 61. AL B. SURE Nite and day (See Bette Midler...) 62. CATHY DENNIS Too many walls (Not enough doors...Apparently, escape is futile...) 63. O.A.R. This town (Man, this is overplayed...)
but not as much as this....
64. O.A.R. Hey girl (I do like the line,"Some people say I'm crazy and I agree/That's OK, 'cause that's the way I like to be", though...)
which leads me to one more song I've heard recently...
65. U2 I'm gonna go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight
After reading this list, it pretty much sums things up, don't it?
And ONE MORE THING....How come it says here that there are 70 diffferent genres to choose from, and all I've ever heard is the same *@!!!#*@!!**##!! for what seems like...FOREVER!!!
I mean...when you almost can tell what song is gonna play next after this one...COME ON!!! TOO PREDICTABLE!!!
I hate to rant on like a raving looney Dennis Miller, but this topic has realy irked me for a long time, so bear with me. I've worked at other establishments, and have seen the differences. Boost morale and knock 'em down a peg? Here today, gone tomorrow? Now I'm starting to wonder, like you said, Herbert, if it isn't so much about programming the station, as it is "re-programming" the listeners? Then again, I probably watch way too many movies (How about one about what it's REALLY like to work in a grocery store? Think anyone would watch?)!!!
Anyway, here's a few more I've heard lately that drive me crazy...
1. HOOBASTANK If I were you (I wouldn't be working here...Isn't that what he's trying to say?) 2. CARBON LEAF A life less ordinary (How do you live a less ordinary life by working in a grocery store?) 3. HOOBASTANK The Reason 4. ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS Move along (You think we're cattle or something?) 5. TOTO Without your love 6. BRITNEY SPEARS I'm not a girl, not yet a woman (You gotta have a song for the teenagers...) 7. MADONNA This used to be my playground (and then a new manager came in...) 8. CELINE DION If you asked me to 9. CELINE DION Where does my heart beat now 10. CELINE DION & CLIVE GRIFFIN When I fall in love 11. CELINE DION That's the way it is 12. CELINE DION I'm alive (After hearing 5 Celine Dion songs, I'd rather be dead...) 13. ROB THOMAS This is how a heart breaks 14. ROB THOMAS Streetcorner Symphony 15. ROB THOMAS Lonely no more 16. ROB THOMAS & SANTANA Smooth 17. ROB THOMAS Ever the same (How about changing the title to "Ever the lame", "Always the same", or "Never to change"? Again, after hearing 5 Rob Thomas songs, I'd rather be dead...)
I KNOW THE WORDS TO EVERY ONE OF THESE INSIDE AND OUT...AND, REALLY, IF THE STATION WAS BETTER, AND THE PLAYLIST CHANGED ON OCCASION, THAT WOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM...WHEN YOU START HUMMING TO AN ANNOYING SONG YOU HEARD AT WORK, AND YOU'RE NOT AT WORK...YEAH, THAT'S A PROBLEM. WHEN THE PLAYLIST IS BACKGROUND MUSIC IN YOUR DREAMS, THAT'S A PROBLEM. IF YOU'RE DREAMING ABOUT WORK WHEN YOU'RE NOT WORKING, NOW YOU'RE PRETTY MUCH SCREWED UP IN THE HEAD!!! Which makes you the perfect Kroger employee, by the way...it's inescapable. It's like your second home. By the way, I'm pretty much annoyed when this stuff comes on at Walgreen's, Meijer's, Target, wherever...THIS IS NOT LIMITED TO KROGER!!! Believe me, too many of these places have no "vision"...Everything's "cookie-cutter" to them...Probably limited resources, too...See, I always thought that variety was the spice of life, but that item is out-of-stock at most places (apparently, someone didn't order enough...)
A few more...
18. BRUCE HORNSBY Across the river 19. BRUCE HORNSBY Every little kiss 20. BRUCE HORNSBY Harbor Lights 21. BRUCE HORNSBY On the Western Skyline 22. BRUCE HORNSBY That's just the way it is, some things will never change, but don't you believe them...WHY SHOULDN'T I BELIEVE THEM...I'VE HEARD THE SAME MUSIC FOR FIVE YEARS!!! SOME THINGS REALLY DO NEVER CHANGE!!! 23. BRUCE HORNSBY There'll be some changes made I'VE HEARD THE SAME MUSIC FOR FIVE YEARS!!! WHAT CHANGE??? 24. JOHN MAYER Waiting on the world to change I'VE HEARD THE EXACT SAME MUSIC FOR FIVE YEARS!!! DO I NEED TO REPEAT MYSELF???

MELISSA ETHERIDGE Angels would fall 47. MELISSA ETHERIDGE Come to my window 48. MELISSA ETHERIDGE Dance without sleeping (Work without sleeping...I'll work till I'm numb...) 49. MELISSA ETHERIDGE If I only wanted to (I could change this station...If only it were that easy...) 50. MELISSA ETHERIDGE It only hurts when I breathe (*This is a cover of a GREENWHEEL song from 2001...I kinda like the GREENWHEEL version...And I'm sorry to say it, Melissa, but it only hurts when I listen...All other times I'm fine...
WOW! That's 6 for Melissa. I think she's "broken the record". I only wish I could, but if I did, I'd be hearing the same song over and over again, instead of the same 100 songs...
I'm sorry I ranted so long...As you can see, I like to make my own lyrics up to a lot of this stuff...When you've heard the same ones for SOOOOOOOO LONG, kinda makes it easy, doesn't it?
^ don't apologize, that was great! We have our own little lyrics to certain songs at our store. They're too explicit to post here, but I'm sure YOU can imagine!
Some easy songs to alter lyrics on are: (not sure if these are the titles)
Well, I walked into my Kroger today, and guess what? They hardly played ANY of the songs I've listed...Is that not a kow-inky-dink or what? You know what THAT means, don't you?
It means I'll have to REVISE my list!!!
Here are but a few MORE that annoy me like all get out:
1. CORINA Temptation (Really? Do you have to play this one in a grocery store? What they should do is have this play every time the fresh chicken sandwiches come out... What's funny is that every time I'm tempted to say something that I shouldn't say to someone I shouldn't say it to, this song comes on and tells me,"Temptation...is a part of life...It doesn't matter if it's wrong or right..." So if it doesn't matter, am I allowed to say it? Personally, I think they play that one to get people to buy more, but I could be wrong...) 2. ROD STEWART & CHER Bewitched, bothered, and bewildered (Am I...every time I ask the night guy to do me ONE SIMPLE FAVOR...and what do I find the next morning??? Maybe he's the one who's bewildered...) 3. ROD STEWART Passion (We all need passion...I've got passion all right! It's too bad the guy I work with doesn't...unless it's a passion for hating people, his job, etc. Actually, we do need more passion....We need incentives, too...Well, at least some of us...) 4. Seriously, in a world full of cellphone ringtones, Ipod playlists that can go into the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, the plenitude of album tracks by many of these same artists, we're forced to listen to this limited selection??? There are jukeboxes that play more!!! I hear the same songs...Sometimes every day for a week...Sometimes twice in a day...Same song...Same artist...Doesn't matter if that artist put out 1,000 songs...It's that ONE that drives you nuts every time...And they know it!!! You know it!!!
I have a song that I like, it goes something like "your always on my mind, ill try to let it show, i know, my oh my OR mine all mine, have searched everywhere and cannot find it!! I work at krogers and hear it regularly!

Finding ways to make you mine

Making my heart feel
Its all or nothing
Please please help I have been looking for months ive tried youtube and every lyrics site I could find and nothing its a female singer and I think pop music thanks so much
I hear a song that goes something like "trust me again, tear down your walls. I won't let you fall." It's annoying as all hell and especially so because I can't find it ANYWHERE. It plays all the time at our Kroger store. A woman sings it and it drives me nuts. Any ideas what it is?
You get several options and genres of music choices . During the holidays , you get to decide what type and what % of your songs are Christmas songs. Going from around 15% December 1st to 100% the 24th. Very amazing and complex playlists with Kroger. I work for them and personally have a strange array of music in my collection. They use to play some of my obscure stuff quite often ( including up all night by Talking Heads )! Check the Lyrics "Obscure". Several times I am coming on here now to look something up I really like. Like tonight. Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy came on at 5:00 pm. Very subtle song , at a very busy time of day!! I am proud to work for them. It is another perk!
Who picks the songs? Or do the songs just play by themselves without anybody choosing what plays when, I am just curious & thank you.
manager's choice of what kind(s) of music are played. I'm thankful that a fill-in manager had some country thrown into our mix, it plays early in the morning from around 6am-8am before the obscure crap from the 80s starts
Whats that song that has a women singing, has a cool trance like beat. And the only lyrics in the song sound like she's saying "sexy mind" The song is catchy and wanted to find it, but with no luck
Some of the music played in my store is so lame that even the soft rock radio stations don't play it. It is some kind of unintelligent mixture of "metal" (if you can call it that), mid-80s flops, and early 2000s songs that were probably top 40 when the store was opened. I have heard a couple good songs like "Hard Day's Night" and "Shot in the Dark" but that is a rare occurence in the midst of Forever Stamps commercials... To which I beg the question, who sends letters anymore?
im trying to find a song its been bugging me for months two of them actually there great but i can't find them. here are the lyrics.
it doesn't take forever
when it comes it comes on strong
once you feel the fire inside you
your on the rise to where you belong.
the other goes is something like "ive waded out to far. ill never turn around gonna reach that..." the next word is the one i cant remember or get right, mostly due to the damn intercom blocking it.
whats the song with the lyrics It doesn't take forever When it comes, it comes on strong Once you feel the fire inside you You'll rise above to where you belong
I work at one in pasadena and they play a few I keep on my ipod like tv on the radio and one that I CANT REMEMBER THE NAME OF! I've been stuck for a while trying to figure out what it is but I know what the song is about. The singer is reciting what his dead girlfriend last told him over an answering machine. It's groovy like butthole surfers and folk implosion but I have no idea who they are, I knew once but kroger has me losing track of months...

My store has been playing the same music for months on end.
I got all excited when I thought I heard a new song one day. Turned out it was an ad.
At one time, the Cultural Council accepted requests for stations.
Now they claim the store has no control over what plays. Hmm.
They're probably right. I've had four different store managers and none of them ever changed the music. I guess if you really hate Kroger music you should be working night crew. They don't have to listen to it, and if they're just stocking/conditioning then they usually listen to their iPods/phones. Maybe that's why none of them wanted to come to day shift and keep their pay whenever our dairy department virtually disappeared overnight.
